Kat Halfman recently joined the Kewaunee County Star-News as its new editor.
Halfman previously worked with other Northeast Wisconsin news publications such as The Press Times, The Business News and the Peshtigo Times. Growing up in Seymour, Halfman pursued a degree in writing at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and interned with The Press Times.
“It was there that I discovered my passion for local journalism,” Halfman wrote in a March 8, 2025 column in the Star-News.
She helped archivist Sandra Shackelford compile the life stories of Hmong refugees interviewed in the 1990s, which Shackelford published as A Portrait of Grief and Courage. She also interned with the Teaching Press, a UW-Green Bay publishing house where authors collaborate with students.
“In an era of internet misinformation and divisive rhetoric, local newspapers are more important than ever,” Halfman wrote in her introductory column. “I am honored to serve the people of Kewaunee County with news that matters to you.:
