News/Media Alliance sets tariff meetings with members of Congress

The News/Media Alliance is setting up meetings with members of Congress to advocate against new proposed tariffs on newsprint and other supplies.

President-Elect Donald Trump plans to use Executive Orders when he takes office in January to institute tariffs of 25 percent on all products imported from Canada and Mexico and layer a 10 percent tariff on top of all imports from China. Newsprint tariffs were reversed in 2018 during the first Trump Administration due to the harm caused to publishers and the American public.

In 2023, Canada produced approximately 80% of newsprint, while the United States produced only 421,000 metric tons. U.S. companies do not even supply certain types of newsprint paper, where it can only be sourced in Canada; therefore, costs will skyrocket.

The alliance has established a Tariff Working Group, so if someone from your company would like to get involved, please contact the alliance’s Membership Team. The alliance has developed a one-page brief and will be sending additional updates. For any questions, please contact Holly Lubart, Vice President, Government Affairs for the News/Media Alliance.
