Hanson retires from Sawyer County Record

After 16 years and nearly 300 “Boomer Life” columns, Kathy Hanson is retiring from the Sawyer County Record in Hayward.

“I never foresaw or thought working for the Record would become another main career. But it has. I leave it with considerable reluctance even though I think it’s my time to go,” Hanson wrote in her farewell column that appeared in the Record on Dec. 4, 2024. “Even second-career Boomers have to retire someday.”

Hanson — who worked as a columnist, reporter and copy editor for the Sawyer County Record and The Four Seasons — credited readers with inspiring the Boomer Life columns through the years.

“You gave me the words and inspiration I used to write about all of it—sometimes flagrantly, always honestly— especially your boomer memories, boomer mistakes, boomer victories, boomers living in the Northwoods, and plain old boomer life,” Hanson wrote.

“Happy trails to all of you, dear boomer friends and readers,” her final column concluded. “Thank you.”
