Let’s spread the word on the importance of local journalism

News/Media Alliance Members,

In less than two weeks, we will convene in Washington, D.C. for the Support Journalism Fly-in where members and advocates will meet with Members of Congress and their staff to reinforce the need for legislation that would compensate news publishers for the use of our valuable content, discuss AI’s impact on journalism and the free press, and more.

Leading up to this event, we need your help to spread the word about the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA)— a bipartisan bill that would allow news publishers to collectively negotiate with Meta and Google for fair compensation for the use of their content. Local news organizations are under pressure. Now more than ever, we need to spread awareness of how Big Tech takes advantage of the news and information created by local publishers, yet they won’t pay for it.

Here are two important actions you can take:

Run ads through September 13 — In an effort to make a big impact, the Alliance is once again providing our “Don’t Let Big Tech Cancel Local News” print and digital ads for news publishers to run leading up to the Support Journalism Fly-in, encouraging readers to support local journalism by asking their member of Congress to support the JCPA.

Publish an editorial — Consider running an editorial in your publication encouraging your local Members of Congress to support this important legislation that will level the playing field and give publishers of all sizes – especially small, local publishers – a chance to get the compensation they deserve from the dominant tech platforms. We’ve provided two sample editorials, “Congress Must Pass Journalism Bill to Save Local News, Stop Dangerous Misinformation” and “We Must Act Now to Save Local News” that you can adapt, or feel free to write your own.

Please run the editorials now through the month September to bring attention to the JCPA.

As always please talk with your members of Congress. Please use our updated JCPA Fact Sheet and Talking Points when talking to your Members of Congress about the need to pass the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA).
