Milwaukee Journal Sentinel statehouse reporter Patrick Marley will join The Washington Post in the newly created position of democracy reporter for the Upper Midwest, The Post reported Thursday.

Marley will focus on how state and local officials navigate pressures on the administration of elections, while tracking legislative and legal battles over voting rules and access to the polls. He also will be responsible for telling the stories of people and communities who have lost faith in the ability of their government to hold free and fair elections, according to the announcement, which noted his reporting will focus on Wisconsin, Michigan and other parts of the Upper Midwest.

Prior to joining the Journal Sentinel in 2004, Marley worked as a reporter at the Brookfield News and the Kenosha News. He also the co-author — with former Journal Sentinel reporter Jason Stein — of “More Than They Bargained For: Scott Walker, Unions and the Fight for Wisconsin.” He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
