The Washington Island Observer has established a grant program named for former managing editor Mary Marik, the newspaper’s board of directors announced this week.

The Mary Marik Community Grant Program will recognize Washington Island nonprofits that make it “a better place to live, work and visit.” Two to three Marik Grant recipients will be awarded $1,000 annually.

Marik, who died Dec. 27, had a passion for journalism and was a long-time contributor to the Observer. She also served on the newspaper’s board of directors following her time as editor.

Grant applications must be submitted by May 1. Recipients will be announced by June 1.
