A. Matt Werner, 13-year editor and publisher of The Sheboygan Press, is remembered as a civic leader.

At the time of his death in November 1977, Werner, 83, was hailed as the longest-serving member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents in state history. He sat on the board for 30 years and was chairman for two of those years.

Republican Governor Julius Heil first appointed Werner onto the board in 1938.

He resigned from the Board of Regents in 1969, saying it was time for a younger person to take his place, according to The Press.

Werner was remembered in Sheboygan County as a dedicated community member. Along with editing and publishing local news, Werner was part of the Sheboygan Police and Fire Commission from 1934 until 1962. For 20 of those years, he was chairman of the commission.

Werner was also elected Sheboygan city attorney in 1923 and served three 2-year terms.

He joined The Sheboygan Press in 1947 as an associate editor while still practicing law. Later, Werner became editor and publisher of The Press in August 1951 and was named chairman of the board until he retired in May 1964.

He died Nov. 3, 1977 at his home in Sheboygan after several years of periodic hospitalizations.
