Born in 1871, Henry “Hank” Howe purchased The Courier in 1911, following the death of its owner, William Merrell. Howe continued to operate the newspaper until his death in 1944.

Howe was the first of four generations of the family to run the newspaper. He was followed by his son Lyman, who died at a young age in 1949. Following Lyman’s death, his wife, Eliese took over along with their sons William “Bill” Howe and Lyman “Jack” Howe. In the fourth generation, one son from each of the brothers took over, Gary Howe and Lyman “John” Howe.
