Schmoldt, a UW-Madison graduate, joined The Gazette in February 2013. His previous stops included a brief stint as managing editor of ProRodeo Sports News in 2012 and five-plus years as a sports reporter for the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune from February 2007 to June 2012.

In his farewell column, Schmoldt notes a number of accomplishments during his eight years leading the sports department, including an increased focus on high school sports and maintaining a local sports section even through a pandemic during which there were no sports.

Schmoldt also credited the job with assisting him in meeting his wife, Whitney, who was an assistant girls basketball coach at the time. They met while Schmoldt was on the job and are now married with two daughters.
