Former longtime Chetek Alert sportswriter Langhough dies at 92

Dr. Orville A. “Orv” Langhough, who for more than three decades served as a sportswriter for The Chetek Alert, died Saturday, Jan. 2, in Eau Claire. He was 92.

Langhough was born July 26, 1928, in Chetek to Dr. Olaf P. and Alfie (Sletten) Langhough. He graduated from Chetek High School and went on to earn degrees in biology and physical education from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

He later attended the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and also served at the Army Chemical Center in Maryland from 1951 to 1953. Following graduation from Palmer, Langhough returned to Chetek in 1955 and joined his father’s chiropractic office.

He married Shirley Hickenbottom on Oct. 29, 1955, and together they had four children — Martin, Richard, Nancy and Michele — and three grandchildren.

Beginning in the 1960s, Langhough covered high school football and basketball games for The Chetek Alert. He continued in the role for more than 30 years until he retired in 2000.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 8, at Christ Lutheran Church in Chetek. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.
