Gannett Foundation to give $2.3 million to community-building nonprofits

MILWAUKEE — The Gannett Foundation on Tuesday announced a $2.3 million crowdfunding and grant program for community-building nonprofits.

The 2020 A Community Thrives program supports organizations that address social issues in their communities, including education, housing, arts and culture, wellness and the environment.

The initiative offers local nonprofits a national platform on which to fundraise, in addition to grants for the most exceptional projects. Organizations selected for the program will work to raise funds through a crowdfunding campaign and may later be eligible for national and regional grants.

More than a dozen national grants will be available, ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. Dozens more regional grants will be available starting at $2,500. Regional grant recipients will be chosen by local leaders across Gannett’s nationwide network of newsrooms, which in Wisconsin includes the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Press-Gazette, The (Appleton) Post-Crescent and several other daily and weekly newspapers.

Three Wisconsin nonprofits were awarded a combined $45,000 in grants in 2019 as part of A Community Thrives. More than $4.5 million was distributed to nonprofits as a result of the program last year, $2.5 million of which was raised through the groups’ fundraising efforts.
