Webinar: Job-hunting during, and after, a pandemic

Date: Apr. 30, 2020
Time: 12:00 am - 12:00 am

On Poynt with Barbara Allen and Sam Ragland

Newsrooms are facing tighter budgets than ever before. Internship programs are being canceled or postponed, layoffs dominate the news and freelance work is drying up. The career impact of the coronavirus is coming into focus for journalists.

Job hunting during a pandemic is unexpected but not an impossible undertaking.

Social distancing, furloughs and working from home present an opportunity for journalists to first reflect on — and second, act on — why they’re the best candidate for a job. Aspiring journalists, out-of-work journalists and freelance journalists sit together at a crossroads. It’s time to take self-inventory and career initiative.

Join Samantha Ragland, Poynter faculty, and Barbara Allen, director of college programming, as they set the job-hunting table. Together, they’ll discuss ways students, under-employed journalists and freelancers can navigate their career progress — both within the industry as well as adjacent to it — during, and after, the pandemic.

You will leave this session knowing how to:

  • Focus your time to benefit your career
  • Take your résumé to the next level
  • Pitch yourself and your stories as a freelancer
