Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Northfield, Minn., she was the eighth and youngest child of Albert and Alma (Thuenen) Hess. She married Rudolph “Rudy” Fischer in 1948.

Fischer grew up and attended high school in Onalaska, before attending La Crosse State (now UW-La Crosse) for two years. She later transferred to UW-Madison, where she would graduate with a journalism degree in 1948.

Roberta and Rudy, who met while working at a restaurant in New York City, had seven children together and also raised two foster children at their home in Westchester County, New York. Once the children were all in school, Fischer resumed her journalism career, working as a part-time reporter for the Patent Trader weekly newspaper in Mount Kisco, N.Y.

A celebration of life service for Fischer will be held at a later date.
