Pulse Research releases 2020 shopping survey findings

Portland, Ore.,  March 11, 2020 (Pulse Research) – Pulse Research has just released the 2020 findings of the Pulse of America (POA) Annual Shopping research.  This is the 11th year of this study that has become the preferred source of shopping information millions of local merchants seek.

The Pulse of America research provides shopping intentions and information about all audiences reached by local newspapers. This research gives newspapers the information needed to demonstrate audience value to local businesses. Audience shopping information is relevant to local merchants because it shows them how many local households intend to shop for the products and services they sell.

Every Fall, Pulse newspaper partners, Press Associations, and other industry organizations promote the POA survey.  The survey captures local shopping intentions for over 600 business categories and thousands of products and services.  Additional findings are collected on reader habits and advertising effectiveness. The overall sample was 5,500. There are regional and state subsets of the nationwide sample for more localized intelligence. As a “thank you” for entering and finishing the survey, one lucky respondent won the randomly selected $3,000 cash prize.

John Marling, Pulse Research President, encourages newspapers of all sizes to leverage these findings.

“Newspapers need to ‘tell their story’. Household shopping intention is the value that a newspaper’s audience provides to any local business.  It is the one thing every small and mid-sized business wants to know when evaluating local media purchasing. It overcomes the misperception that ‘print is dead’ and not reaching local customers. The newspaper can then efficiently provide relevant solutions needed to help local businesses grow.”
