More journalists than ever may be covering the Capitol, writes Steven Walters, a senior producer for the public affairs channel WisconsinEye, in a guest column for The (Janesville) Gazette.
The new 2019-20 Blue Book lists 42 Capitol reporters for news organizations. However, that number is low for several reasons, Walters notes.
First, it doesn’t account for the reporters and student journalists who get daily press passes for major events.
Second, the Blue Book doesn’t include new online news organizations, like Empower Wisconsin, Center Square and the Wisconsin Examiner, that now say they cover the Capitol. It also doesn’t list the MacIver Institute, which has sued Gov. Tony Evers, alleging that its news service was denied inclusion on a list of media outlets that receive notices from the governor’s office.
