Father Tony, a journalist before he became a priest, dies at 92

Father Anthony “Tony” Schumacher, who worked as a journalist for many years before joining the priesthood, died Monday, Sept. 9, in Fitchburg. He was 92.

One of six children, Schumacher was born June 15, 1927, in Alton, Iowa, to Nick and Mary (Meyers) Schumacher. After graduating high school from St. Mary’s Academy in Alton, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a medic.

Schumacher later graduated from Marquette University and worked many years as a journalist in Wisconsin. He spent time at The Stoughton Courier Hub and The (Janesville) Gazette, as well as the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance.

In 1960, after attending St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, Schumacher was ordained as a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Madison. He served at several churches in the Madison Diocese, and in retirement, was chaplain at Edgewood College and St. Mary Hospital in Madison.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church, 651 N. Main St., Oregon. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service, beginning at 9 a.m.
