Steve Ehle, a longtime Madison-area journalist, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, after a battle with pneumonia. He was 69.

Ehle, who was born in Stoughton, grew up in Evansville before attending UW-Madison. He played baseball at UW and earned his degree in journalism.

After graduating from college, Ehle worked at his parents’ company, Leader Printing in Lake Mills, while serving as sports editor of the Evansville Post and as a correspondent for The (Madison) Capital Times. His career later took him to Texas and Indiana before returning to Wisconsin.

Ehle served as editor of the Stoughton Courier Hub from 1979 to 1986. During that time, the Courier Hub won 26 awards in the WNA’s Better Newspaper Contest.

Following his time in Stoughton, Ehle was editor of the trade magazine Wood Digest from 1986 to 2009.

Ehle is survived by his son, Jonathan; brother, John Ehle; sister, Kathleen Campbell; former wife and good friend, Jennifer Eager Ehle; and girlfriend, Karbet Sawtelle.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Cooksville Lutheran Church, 1927 W Church St, Cooksville.
