JEFFERSON – Retired journalist Joe Schackelman has published his third book, titled “Growing Up in a Small Town,” which shares memories of growing up in Jefferson during the 1940s and 1950s, the Daily Jefferson County Union reported.
Schackelman, who lives in Racine, retired at the end of 1999 following 28 years at the Labor Paper in Kenosha. He previously worked at the Marinette Eagle-Star and The (Racine) Journal Times. During his 42-year newspaper career, Schackelman served as an investigative reporter, advertising representative, feature writer, columnist, city editor, managing editor and publisher.
In his latest book, Schackelman tells six stories based on his own life in Jefferson, with some degree of fictionalization. His previous books include the 2000 nonfiction book “God Lives: Interviews with People Who’ve Had Extraordinary Spiritual Experiences” and the fiction book “Wind, Sand and Hope: One Man’s Spiritual Journey,” which was published in 2017.
