Blake Kellogg, a longtime journalist, editor, professor and newspaper consultant, died Wednesday, Oct. 3 in Madison. He was 87.
Kellogg, a South Dakota native, was news director and anchor at WKOW-TV Channel 27 in Madison from 1960 to 1969. He later served as press secretary for Wisconsin Gov. Patrick J. Lucey and as a communications professor for 21 years at UW-Madison Extension.
More than 10,000 editors took classes on editing and design taught by Kellogg during his UW tenure. Kellogg also served as a frequent consultant to weekly newspapers throughout Wisconsin.
For his dedicated service to the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Kellogg was awarded the coveted WNA red jacket. As a former newsman, Kellogg frequently presented at WNA events, including the Trees for Tomorrow retreat.
Kellogg, after graduating with a political science degree in 1953, served two years in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a first lieutenant. Upon leaving the service, he returned to South Dakota State University to complete a major in journalism.
