Summer’s not over yet—so come along as we discover some of Wisconsin’s most exciting outdoor adventures across the counties! From the Island Shore and the Northwoods Territory to the Coastal Corridor, River Country, and the Driftless Area, we’re covering it all.
Island Shore
Let’s start on Wisconsin’s Island Shore! In Bayfield County, hop on the Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway—a 70-mile route that winds through gorgeous forests and by the shores of Lake Superior. Take the Madeline Island Ferry to Madeline Island! Here, check out Big Bay State Park—home to miles of beach, campsites, as well as hiking and nature trails.
Back on the mainland, continue along the scenic shoreline to end up in Douglas County, home to the Bois Brule River. It is also home to Wisconsin’s tallest waterfall, Big Manitou Falls, located in Pattison State Park. Learn more here.
Northwoods Territory
Up next, venture to the Northwoods Territory! Start in Forest County, taking the Nicolet–Wolf River Scenic Byway through the Chequamegon‑Nicolet National Forest and alongside the Wolf River. Explore over 50 miles of UTV‑friendly trails! For a sneak peek, click here.
Head to Vilas County next. Known as the land of more than 1,300 lakes, there are endless ways to get on the water. Vilas County is also home to the Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail, offering more than 52 miles of paved trails.
In Oneida County, check out the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom for hiking and epic challenges. For golfers, Northwood Golf Club offers a scenic 18‑hole course you won’t want to miss. Get a quick course overview here.
Conclude the scenic loop in Langlade County! Stop by River Forest Campground & Rafts for a day in the rapids. Then, check out Crocker Hills Recreation Area. Quick tip: Hwy 45 Riding Stables offers amazing guided horseback rides!
Coastal Corridor
Make your way to the eastern edge of the state, also known as the Coastal Corridor! Buckle up and hit the Door County Coastal Byway! This 66‑mile loop showcases Lake Michigan, the Bay of Green Bay, the Niagara Escarpment bluffs, and the eight communities it passes through.
See from a new vantage point by visiting one of Door County’s 11 lighthouses, including Cana Island. Back on the byway, detour to visit a few scenic parks, including Newport State Park, where you can hike, bike, and even see some wildlife. Click here for more.
River Country
Head west to explore River Country, home to Crawford and Grant counties. Let the Lower Wisconsin River Road lead the way. Just off the road, embark on hikes at Sugar Creek Bluff State Natural Area and Rush Creek State Natural Area.
Follow the river road into Grant County, where Wyalusing State Park and Nelson Dewey State Park await! Camp above the river, hike the trails, paddle the river, and watch for birds. Then discover nearby historic sites like Stonefield! See what awaits here.
Driftless Area
Last but certainly not least, welcome to the Driftless Area! Begin in Vernon County on the Wisconsin Great River Road, the state’s only National Scenic Byway! Hike at Kickapoo Valley Reserve, bike on the Hillsboro State Trail, then paddle the Kickapoo River! Feeling lucky? Cast a line at Clements Fishing Barge. Discover more here.
Next, in Sauk County, Devil’s Lake State Park is a must-stop. If you’re traveling with kids, check out more family fun here. Then head to Iowa County for The House on the Rock and Mineral Point, a historic gem well worth a visit. Get a glimpse of this charming town here.
