The Google News Initiative Growth Catalyst program is back for 2026.
Applications are open for publishers with strong plans to expand into new markets.
You’ll receive roughly $100,000 in support for your top-notch expansion idea alongside a year of Blue Engine coaching in a community of courageous, ambitious peers doing similar work.
So far, GNI has been absolutely blown away by the efforts of the 20 publishers across the country signed up to grow into new markets (you can see all of them below), with more exciting proposals coming from you this year.

Key details: The application deadline is May 7, 2026.
All U.S.-based news organizations with a proven model and a clear, credible plan to expand into a new market are eligible.
Coaching begins and grant funds disbursed during the third quarter of 2026.

Here’s how we recommend you approach your application this year:
Prove your core is strong: Show how your expansion builds on your existing strengths. The ability to expand your talent across multiple markets is a core driver of expansion success.
Be real about your risks: Name what could go wrong and how you’ll handle it. You’ll go a long way to proving that you can handle whatever comes up by thinking through your key challenges. One key risk to avoid: new markets and new-to-you products (launching a podcast in a new market when you’ve never had a podcast before, e.g.). You’re doubling your challenge right off the bat.
Know your financial path: Map a clear road to sustainability, even if not-quite-yet break-even, beyond the grant. Help us understand that you can manage the financial situation beyond the grant period by showing how you’ll grow and manage your risk along the way.
Start close to home: Proximity drives speed, leverage, and cultural alignment. Our experience is that most, but certainly not all, of the best expansion opportunities are right next door.
Invest in marketing early: Distribution is as important as the journalism itself. Zero marketing budget? Red flag.
Who’s calling you in? Demonstrate the community leaders, sponsors or other funders who are supporting your effort. If you were one of the 175+ applicants for this program last year, we’re ready to make this application as easy as possible.
