The Cap Times will host middle and high school students this July for the 2026 Youth Press Corps, a summer journalism camp coordinated by the Greater Madison Writing Project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
A piece about the corps appeared in the March 25, 2026 issue of The Cap Times. According to the story:
Students will spend the five-day camp learning about the news reporting process from current and former journalists, as well as journalism educators. They will learn skills such as how to conduct interviews, write articles and navigate ethical questions.
A Cap Times reporter will assist journalism educators facilitating the program.
Guest speakers will also attend the Youth Press Corps and share their experiences in the journalism industry with students.
All participants will write a story about an issue important to them and have the opportunity to publish their work in the Cap Times.
Registration for the camp is now open to students entering 7th through 12th grade. Early bird registration before May 1 is $350. Registration after that date is $400. If cost is a barrier to participation, needs-based assistance is available through the Greater Madison Writing Project.
The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during July 27-31. The camp will be held at the Cap Times’ office at 1901 Fish Hatchery Road.
The 2026 Youth Press Corps marks the fourth time the Cap Times and the Greater Madison Writing Project have partnered to host the camp. The Youth Press Corps program was first established in 2019 with a focus on rural communities but has since expanded.
The Greater Madison Writing Project is part of the National Writing Project, a professional development and learning community for educators who teach writing. It is housed in the UW-Madison English department’s Center for Teaching and Research on Writing.
