A parent speaking at a recent Kenosha Unified School District Board of Education meeting raised concerns about transparency and student privacy after a Southport Elementary School teacher allegedly photographed a second grade class on a personal phone and sent the picture to another teacher.
The incident, detailed in the Kenosha County Eye, was part of an Around the State wrap-up published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s March 22, 2026 issue. According to the story:
According to the parent, the incident began when the teacher punished the class after some students misbehaved.
Students were allegedly required to stand against a fence during recess as a punishment. The teacher then allegedly photographed the class.
According to the parent, the teacher told the students the picture would be shown to their regular classroom teacher, who was on medical leave.
School administrators subsequently confirmed the photo was sent to the teacher.
After the parent asked for a copy of the photo, the situation escalated. When a person asks a government entity for a record that exists, the request must be treated as a valid public records request.
The parent told the school board the photo was requested multiple times before school officials said it had been deleted.
School documentation indicates that administrators spoke with the teacher involved and reviewed district policy, but that no formal discipline was imposed.
