Longtime News-Shield cartoonist dies

Minnesota cartoonist Ed Fischer, whose humorous drawings have entertained Barron News-Shield readers for decades, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, according to an email message his daughter, Rebekka Fischer. 

A story in the Feb. 4, 2026 issue of the Barron News-Shield related the news. According to the story; 

Born Aug. 10, 1937, Fischer had a distinguished career in editorial cartooning that “spanned more than 70 years and brought laughter, insight, and warmth to audiences of all ages,” according to an obituary published last week.

Fischer’s blend of sharp humor, gentle wit, and expressive artistry earned him a devoted following and a place in more than 50 syndicated newspapers. During his career, Fischer published more than eight books, met three U.S. presidents, and was a regular attendee at the National Press Club. 

After communicating with the Fischer family, the News-Shield will continue to print cartoons from Ed Fischer’s catalog of thousands of unpublished cartoons.

Funeral services for Fischer were Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, at Lino Lakes, Minn.
