Embrace the shorter days and soak in those stunning night skies at these state and county parks! From Northwoods islands to Driftless hilltops, we’ve got the best parks for magical stargazing, and maybe even a northern lights surprise. Keep reading to chase the stars across the Badger State!
Big Bay State Park
Nestled on the eastern shore of Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands, Big Bay State Park is a stargazer’s dream with zero light pollution. You’ll have to take a quick ferry ride from Bayfield, but trust us, it’s worth every minute! While you’re there, explore snowy cliffs, peek at ice caves, and hit top-notch trails. After dark, bundle up and take in the stunning starry skies that could light up with northern lights. After all, you’re in the Northwoods!
Newport State Park
Wisconsin’s only wilderness park and the state’s first International Dark Sky Park, Newport is your go-to for dreamy winter night skies. Tucked on the Door County thumb overlooking Lake Michigan, the views are unreal. With no light pollution, the Milky Way pops right out, stars feel close enough to touch, and you might catch northern lights if the conditions line up! But be sure to pack extra layers for those brisk Lake Michigan winds.
Wyalusing State Park
Head to Wyalusing State Park in the Driftless Area for next-level stargazing at the Huser Astronomy Center, just a quick walk from the park office and loaded with powerful telescopes. Run by the local StarSplitters Astronomy Club, this nonprofit gem puts on free public programs that make the stars super accessible for everyone. And not to worry, the club’s volunteers are super friendly and love sharing insider tips for seeing the best of the stars!
Wildcat Mountain State Park
Deep in Driftless country and on track to become Wisconsin’s second International Dark Sky Park, Wildcat Mountain is just the place for off-grid stargazing. Feeling adventurous? Go full off-grid! Reserve a cart-in campsite (free carts provided for your gear), unload, then wander the iconic Starlight Trail under those crisp winter skies. Insider tip: Venture up to the upper picnic area overlook for views that’ll absolutely blow you away!
White Mound County Park
Sauk County’s White Mound County Park is a total must, with 1,100 acres wrapping around White Mound Lake with natural beauty everywhere you look. During winter, the lake transforms into a frozen mirror that reflects the bright stars. Cozy up at Prairie Smoke Terrace, which overlooks it all. Keep the fire going, enjoy a home-cooked meal, play games with family and friends, and, of course, soak in the prime stargazing under the bright night sky.
Blue Mound State Park
Cap it off at Blue Mound State Park, Southern Wisconsin’s highest point, with more unbeatable night-sky views. Any winter bikers? Be sure to hit the Military Ridge State Trail while you’re in the area. The trail’s grade makes it doable even in snowshoes if fat-tire biking isn’t your thing. After an epic ride (or walk), settle in for the starry show. Make it the ultimate winter getaway and pack your tent or book a cozy cabin.
These stargazing parks are just a glimpse into Wisconsin’s magical winter sky. There’s so much more out there waiting under those dark, starry nights! So bundle up, chase the stars with your crew, and keep discovering more. Clear skies ahead!
