Carvd N Stone and Milwaukee Film will present Voices of the Black Press, a free documentary screening and post-screening talkback centered on Black journalism and media, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 at The Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee.

The event features a screening of “The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords,” a groundbreaking film exploring the historic role of Black-owned newspapers and media outlets — platforms that informed, protected, and empowered African Americans during pivotal moments in the nation’s history.

The documentary will be followed by a moderated conversation that connects the film’s themes to the Black media landscape. The post-screening talkback will be moderated by Nyesha Stone, founder of Carvd N Stone, and national journalist Dawn Montgomery, the Culture Critic of the Black Press USA, and will feature the following panelists:

• Shannon Sims, former WTMJ4 anchor;

• Tannette Elie, president, NABJ Milwaukee;

• Earl Arms, host of Black Nouveau on Milwaukee PBS and Media, and public relations strategist at Northwestern Mutual;

• Kim Shine, senior digital producer, Radio Milwaukee;

• Kayla Lewis-Allen, owner, Full Circle Enterprises; and

• Carrie Mahone, co-host of Jammin with Juice.

The screening is FREE and open to the public, with tickets required for entry (please keep in mind, our last event sold out). Get free tickets here.
