Jefferson County DA: No police officer charges in Fort Atkinson shooting

Jefferson County District Attorney Monica J. Hall said no charges will be filed against a Fort Atkinson police officer in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Fort Atkinson male Logan S. Krahn on Oct. 26.

A story in the Dec. 15, 2025 issue of the Watertown Daily Times covered the charging decision, which was made six weeks after the shooting. According to the story:

Police responded to a subject who was known to the Fort Atkinson Police Department and was reported to be dangerous to others in and around his residence, with firearms involved. Multiple officers responded before the suspect was ultimately shot multiple times.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation noted in the releases that the identity of the officer is a matter of public interest, and identified him as Zachary Steinert of the Fort Atkinson Police Department. The deceased suspect was identified as 22-year-old Logan S. Krahn of Fort Atkinson.

Krahn was treated at the scene by law enforcement personnel before being transported to Fort Memorial Hospital and then via MedFlight to UW Hospital in Madison, where he was pronounced dead.

Krahn can be seen on security video released by DCI tucking what appears to be a handgun into the waist-
band of his pants in the driveway before entering the house. He briefly emerges and can be heard stating “I’ve got a shotgun,” while swinging the barrel of a long-barreled firearm in the door frame.

Later, he emerged with an assault rifle, and is seen shouldering it before the DCI video redacts the shooting itself.

Hall and the staff of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office determined that the evidence indicated that Steinert was justified in using deadly force.

“Other witness statements were consistent with the facts stated above,” Hall said in her statement. “For these reasons, I find the facts in this case do not support probable cause to believe the officer committed a crime.”

Steinert was initially placed on administrative leave following the incident.
