The Increscent, Beloit Memorial High School’s student newspaper, and three of its staffers earned honors in the 2024-25 Kettle Moraine Press Association competition.
The awards were detailed in a Dec. 11, 2025 story posted in the Beloit Daily News. According to the story:
The Increscent was one of four to be honored with the top award for News Magazine. It shared that the honor with publications from Madison East High School in Wisconsin and Lake Zurich and Grayslake high schools in Illinois.
Ja’Naya Lofton, opinion editor, won a best of show and honorable mention for two of her columns. Mar-
rah Alverson, who graduated in 2024, received an honorable mention for a feature article. Adrianne Sanderson, staff reporter, was given an award of excellence for a feature article.
Launched in 1894, the Increscent is Wisconsin’s longest-running high school newspaper.
The KEMPA was created to support high school journalism in Wisconsin and Illinois. It annually holds fall, winter and summer conferences and workshops at UW-Whitewater and offers financial aid for graduating seniors pursuing journalism-related college degrees.
