A surprise Oct. 19 celebration at the Random Lake Historical Museum marked 50-plus years for Gary Feider as editor of The Sounder in Random Lake.
The celebration included friends and family members, Random Lake High School Class of 1971 members as well as past and current Sounder employees. The event also included a display of old newspapers.
Feider wrote about the event in a column that appeared in the Oct. 23, 2025 issue of The Sounder.
The late Ray and Bernice Scholler gave Feider the opportunity to edit the Random Lake Times for so many years. It was Ray’s father, Henry C. Scholler, who established the newspaper in May of 1918.
In September of 2022 the Scholler family sold The Sounder to the Schanen family of Port Publications Inc. in Port Washington.
“They have allowed me to continue running The Sounder,” Feider wrote, “and it was great that publisher Bill Schanen III said a few words at Sunday’s program.”
“Covering the news from this corner of the world has been quite an adventure from May of 1975 to the present. We needed to work through many technological changes as we told the story of communities and families that also were undergoing changes (mostly for the better),” Feider reflected in his column entitled The Editor’s View. “It is an exciting job because you begin each week with a blank page. That also can be a little scary.”
