Fox Point village manager charged in fatal crash retires from position

Fox Point Village Manager Scott Botcher — charged in connection with a June crash that killed a motorcyclist in Waukesha County — is retiring from his village office.

The retirement was covered in a Sept. 3 story that appeared in Brookfield’s West Now publication but authored by Claudia Levens from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. According to the story:

Botcher submitted an Aug. 25 letter announcing he’d retire on Sept. 2, according to Fox Point Police Chief and Interim Village Manager Christopher Freedy. The letter was accepted by Village President Christine Symchych.

Botcher was charged with one misdemeanor count of hit and run-attended vehicle in connection with a June 25 crash on I-94 that killed 29-year-old Colton Jose.

Jose’s family members have raised concerns that the charge doesn’t accurately reflect the loss of life. The Wisconsin State Patrol has not released the results of its investigation into the crash even though the court case is ongoing.

Botcher, who spent 38 years in public service and has served as Fox Point Village Manager since 2015, did not acknowledge the investigation in his resignation letter, which was slightly more than one page in length.

“Serving as Fox Point’s Village Manager has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my career, and it has been a privilege to guide this community through times of change and progress,” Botcher wrote in the letter.

“Leadership is measured not only in how you begin, but how you finish,” Botcher wrote in the letter. “It is measured in how you step back and the spirit and integrity with which you depart. I leave the Village grateful for entrusting me with this responsibility, to the residents for holding us to high standards of performance and to the staff for their professionalism, dedication and friendship.”
