Report for America on Aug. 5 announced it has surpassed a major milestone: 100,000 stories published by its corps member reporters since its founding in 2018. These stories, reported in every state across the U.S., reflect not just the volume of work, but a profound and growing impact on the communities they serve.
The milestone coincides with the release of the organization’s 2025 Impact Report, which highlights the work of corps members and the innovative, scalable model behind Report for America’s success. From shifting public narratives and shaping local policy to rebuilding trust in local journalism, the program continues to redefine what journalism looks like in underserved areas.
“This milestone is not just about quantity,” said Kim Kleman, executive director of Report for America. “These 100,000 stories have changed lives, challenged power, and helped keep communities informed. And we’re just getting started.”
Key highlights from this past year alone, and featured in our 2025 Impact Report, include:
• Placing 181 reporters in 152 newsrooms;
• Helping newsrooms raise $12 million in revenue to grow and extend their local reporting;
• 55% of 2025 program graduates accepting permanent positions in their host newsrooms
• Celebrating nearly 10,000 published stories, many of them groundbreaking and award-winning, from climate reporting in the Mississippi River Basin to criminal justice coverage in Birmingham and post-disaster reporting in Maui and Asheville.
Amid rising concerns over misinformation and the collapse of local news ecosystems, Report for America has emerged as a proven model for sustaining vital journalism. By placing talented reporters into local newsrooms and sharing the cost with philanthropy and communities, the organization offers a future-facing approach to restoring trust in news and revitalizing democracy.
