Nestled between two lakes and home to the University of Wisconsin, Madison is a city where nature, art, and culture connect and thrive. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime Wisconsinite, here’s how to spend a day soaking up all that this capital city has to offer.
Start with Sunrise on Lake Monona
Begin your day with a peaceful stroll or bike ride along the Lake Monona Loop. The views of the city skyline reflecting off the water, especially near the Monona Terrace, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, are a perfect way to start the day. If you’re an early riser, grab coffee and a pastry from one of the many cafes as you make your way down to Capitol Square.
Tour the Wisconsin State Capitol
No visit is complete without stepping inside the Wisconsin State Capitol. Free tours run daily, giving you a peek into the stunning architecture, including marble-clad chambers and stunning rotunda murals. Climb to the observation deck for a panoramic view of Madison’s unique isthmus layout. Fun fact: It’s the only state capitol building in the United States to sit on an actual isthmus!
Stroll Down State Street
Connecting the Capitol Square to the UW-Madison campus, State Street is a pedestrian-friendly avenue packed with local shops, art galleries, and global eateries. Stop at one of the many restaurants or cafes for a midday bite, and be sure to get some shopping in, too. The views of the Capitol from State Street can’t be beat, so get ready for a great photo-op!
Lunch on the Square
If you’re visiting on a Saturday during the summer, you’re in luck! The Dane County Farmers’ Market surrounds the Capitol Square and is one of the largest producers-only farmers’ markets in the country. Grab a spicy cheese bread, fresh berries, and maybe a bouquet of sunflowers. On other days, you can’t go wrong with a stop at The Old Fashioned for none other than a classic Wisconsin old-fashioned and a plate of beer-battered cheese curds.
Afternoon on the UW Campus and Memorial Union Terrace
Wander through the UW-Madison campus, where historic buildings meet botanical gardens. Then settle in at Memorial Union Terrace with a scoop of Babcock ice cream and a lakefront view. The colorful terrace chairs are iconic, and the people-watching is unmatched. If you’re there on the right night, you might even be able to catch some live music!
Catch the Sunset from Picnic Point
For one of the best sunset views in the city, head to Picnic Point, a narrow peninsula extending into Lake Mendota. It’s a short, scenic hike and well worth the effort. Bring a blanket, a few snacks, and soak in the golden hour glow as it lights up the skyline.
Evening Vibes
Cap off your day with a drink and a view at Eno Vino Downtown. This bar provides a stunning view of the Capitol in the evening, and the vibes are unmatched. Madison’s nightlife is eclectic and full of character, offering everything from jazz and indie rock to stand-up comedy and trivia nights.
In just one day, Madison offers a taste of everything that makes Wisconsin special: natural beauty, rich history, great food, and an unmistakable sense of community. One visit won’t be enough, but it’s a great start! Tag us in all of your adventures @discoverwisconsin!
