Wisconsin Watch, Simpson Street Free Press get Evjue grants

Wisconsin Watch and Simpson Street Free Press were among the recipients of Evjue Foundation grants announced by The Cap Times on June 11, 2025.

Wisconsin Watch will receive $15,000 in general support of the nonprofit’s investigative journalism. Other journalism-related grant recipients include:

• Simpson Street Free Press will $20,000 in support of its academic programming using youth newspaper production;

• UW Press will receive $20,000 to fund Evjue Internships in publishing that train participants in writing, editing, marketing and fundraising; and

• Wisconsin Institute for Youth Journalism will receive $5,000 for a summer journalism-related program.

Including the June 11 grants, the foundation has awarded more than $72 million in grants since it was established by the late William T. Evjue, the founder and longtime editor and publisher of The Capital Times. Evjue started the foundation in 1958, and upon his death in 1970, willed his controlling stock in the newspaper to a charitable trust that, in turn, donates the proceeds to the foundation with the provision that the money be used to support local charitable, educational and community nonprofits.

The foundation will also consider another round of grants this fall, according to the article.
