Retired Antigo Daily Journal editor raising money to digitize newspaper microfilm

No presses are stopping, and no large block type is being used, but The Antigo Public Library has launched a $100,000 fundraising campaign to digitize historical editions of the Antigo Daily Journal and other local newspapers and U.S. Census records that are now on microfilm (photo illustration courtesy Canva).

The Antigo Public Library has launched a $100,000 fundraising campaign to digitize historical editions of the Antigo Daily Journal and other local newspapers and U.S. Census records that are now on microfilm.

Antigo Public Library Director Toni Edge and Lisa Haefs, a 37-year employee of the Antigo Daily Journal who retired as editor in 2020, are working on the project detailed in the June 4, 2025 issue of the Daily Journal with the aim of preserving Langlade County history.

According to the story, newspapers archived on microfilm at the library include 120 years of the Antigo Daily Journal, The Antigo Weekly Journal and The Antigo Republican. The library also has on microfilm U.S. Census records for the county going back to the 1800s. In all, the library has about 500 rolls of microfilm that it hopes to digitalize and make them available in a searchable database via computer.

To donate to the digitization project, mail a check made out to the Antigo Public Library Foundation  — with a note stating the donation is being used for the digitization project — to 617 Clermont St., Antigo, WI 54409.
