In an April 1, 2025 piece, The Shepherd Express mourned the death of longtime Milwaukee newspaper columnist Joel McNally, who died in February at age 80.
After being let go in 1995 from the Milwaukee Journal after 27 years with the newspaper, McNally joined the staff of the Shepherd Express in 1996 as editor. He left the publication as editor in 1999 but continued to write his column, “Taking Liberties,” until his health prevented him from writing the column in late 2024.
“He remained an irascible foe of the bullying, corruption and lies that have increasingly characterized American politics,” David Luhrssen wrote in the item. “We will miss him.”
