Alliance: Newsprint exempt from April 2 tariffs

Newsprint continues to be exempt from tariffs (photo courtesy News/Media Alliance).

On April 2, President Trump announced a sweeping new set of reciprocal tariffs on goods from a variety of countries.

As part of this new tariff regime, USMCA-compliant goods, including newsprint, will continue to be exempt from both the 25% tariffs imposed on goods from Canada and Mexico, and the additional 10% baseline tariff announced April 2. Newsprint and other paper-based products used by U.S. newspapers and magazines fall under this exemption, which was originally scheduled to expire on April 2.

Note that this is separate from the investigation being conducted by the Department of Commerce, which the News/Media Alliance filed comments on yesterday, whereby lumber-specific tariffs are being considered on imports from Canada.

The News/Media Alliance will continue to monitor this situation, and keep you apprised of further developments. If you would like to join the Alliance’s Tariff Working Group, please send a message to Holly Lubart, Vice President, Government Affairs.
