The state of U.S. journalism, which faces new challenges from politicians and market forces, will be the subject of a lively April 9 panel discussion featuring three Wisconsin news executives, including WNA past president and board member George Stanley.

Wisconsin Public Radio Director of Radio Sarah Ashworth, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Executive Editor Greg Borowski and Wisconsin Watch CEO Stanley will talk about those issues, including how journalists are responding, at the April 9 event sponsored by the Milwaukee Press Club and Press Club Endowment.

The free public event begins at 6 p.m. at the Newsroom Pub, located at 137 E. Wells St. in Milwaukee. Advance registration isn’t required.

Ashworth, Borowski and Stanley will comment on journalism’s challenges, and take audience questions.

Stanley in 2023 was named CEO of Wisconsin Watch after serving as Journal Sentinel editor from 2015 to 2022. He was named to the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2024.

Stanley was hired by the Milwaukee Sentinel in 1989 as a state reporter before being named business editor. He took the same position at the merged Journal Sentinel before becoming managing editor. Stanley previously worked at the Lake Geneva Regional News, Ducks Unlimited magazine and the Wichita (Kan.) Eagle.

Borowski was appointed as the Journal Sentinel’s executive editor in 2023. He joined the newspaper in 1998 as City Hall reporter and later served as watchdog team editor and deputy editor for news, projects and investigations. Borowski previously was a reporter at the Marion (Ind.) Chronicle-Tribune and Lansing (Mich.) State Journal.

Ashworth has overseen Wisconsin Public Radio’s two networks, WPR News and WPR Music, since 2023. Her 25 years of journalism experience includes work as Vermont Public’s head of content, and newsroom roles at Minnesota Public Radio, New Hampshire Public Radio and KBIA, a National Public Radio-member station in Columbia, Missouri.
