Volume 113, Number 41 of the Wakefield News-Bessemer Pick & Axe — the issue published Feb. 28, 2025 — will be its last one, according to editor and publisher Andy Hill in an interview printed Feb. 27 in The Daily Globe of Ironwood.
In the interview, Hill said it is no longer financially viable to run the newspaper his wife and he purchased about 19 years ago in Wakefield, Mich. Declining ad sales and steadily dropping circulation were cited by Hill as among the reasons why his wife and he are shutting the paper down.
Hill, who began his journalism career as a sports writer for the paper in 1975, said he never considered selling the newspaper.
“I have worked alongside Andy Hill for years in the newspaper industry, and Andy is someone I consider to be a friend and also a consummate professional,” said Heidi Ofstad, publisher and advertising director for The Daily Globe. “Andy lives and breathes journalism and knows how important journalism is to our community.”
