Doug Welch, who worked for 22 years as managing editor of The Milton Courier, recently accepted the Historic Preservation Recognition Award from the Janesville Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. The Feb. 8 presentation was reported in the Feb. 10 issue of The Gazette in Janesville.
A local historian, Welch was the assistant director of the Milton House Museum for five years and since 2019 has been the curator and administrative director of the Main Hall Museum on the former Milton College campus while also serving as president of the Milton College Preservation Society.
In addition to his service to Milton historic organizations, Welch has authored and edited books about Milton’s history including: “The Milton House: Interests of the Highest Value,” “The History of Milton College Football,” “Images of America: Milton,” “Voices: The Milton College Story,” and “The Ashippun Trap,” a novel of baseball and the Milwaukee Braves’ final season.
“The work you have dome at the Milton House and Milton College to preserve its history and tell its stories has been outstanding,” said Janesville Chapter DAR Regent (president) Beth Mullen while presenting the award to Welch Saturday at the Janesville Women’s Club in the Feb. 10 article. “The Historic Preservation Recognition Award is designed to recognize worthy local individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in all areas of historic preservation.”
“I am honored beyond words and quite surprised to be chosen for this award,” Welch said in the article. “This comes at a time when I am in the process of designing and mounting information and image display boards for our soon- to-be completed Abolitionist and Civil War Room at Main Hall on the former Milton College campus.”
