With the Nov. 5, 2024 election fast approaching, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the Media Freedom & Access Clinic recently released resources relating to press access to polling places, the vote tabulation process, key access to records and resources, campaign events and post-election voter polling.
The Election Legal Guide prepared by the Reporters Committee provides an overview of legal issues that journalists may face while reporting on the 2024 election cycle. View the Election Legal Guide in Spanish / Vea la Guía Legal Para Las Elecciones en Español.
Wisconsin allows both the press and the public to access polling locations as long as members of the press or public don’t disrupt the proceedings. A chief inspector or municipal clerk may designate separate observation areas provided those areas still provide a clear view of the proceedings. Photography is also allowed as long as a marked ballot is not depicted.
