Multiple award-winning photographer David Sandell died on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024.
Born in Beloit and married to Judith Shannon, Sandell is survived by his family of five children.
Sandell worked as chief photographer for The Capital Times newspaper for just short of 50 years, covering UW-Madison campus riots of the 1960s, presidential campaign appearances of the 1970s, dodged football players at Camp Randall and caught the drama of Storage Warehouse in the early 1990s. His photographs earned several Associated Press Editor’s Choice and Wisconsin Newspaper Association awards.
At one point in his photography ventures, he applied, and was under consideration for, the job of White House Photographer during the Jimmy Carter administration.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Judy Sandell; and his parents.
Per Sandell’s wishes, a small family service will be held. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
