Tom Kertscher recently joined Wisconsin Watch’s statehouse team. His addition will broaden Wisconsin Watch’s capacity to expose misinformation and respond to reader tips. He has already reported about 300 stories for Wisconsin Watch as a freelancer.

Separately, Kertscher has delivered insightful features to Wisconsin Watch readers, including looks at how rare “redo” elections in Wisconsin highlight growing ballot scrutiny and how school shootings affect small towns.

Kertscher, who lives outside of Milwaukee, spent 20 years at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after working for newspapers in Oklahoma, Illinois and California. He completed a Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism master’s degree at the Ohio State University, but graduated with his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He has covered Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks games for the Associated Press and was featured in the Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer” for his coverage of the Steven Avery trial. He has been a contributing writer to Milwaukee Magazine, written two sports books, one on Marquette basketball coach and broadcaster Al McGuire and the other on Brett Favre. Outside of journalism, he’s a big fan of live music.
