The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is urging members to support the USPS Services Enhancement and Regulatory Viability Expansion and Sustainability for the U.S. Act .
Under the USPS’s Delivering for America plan, newspapers have suffered punitive rate hikes every six months.
Meanwhile, mail service has deteriorated and productivity at the USPS has suffered the worst declines ever recorded. Publishers are paying a lot more for less service, and the USPS’s regulator, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), has been powerless to stop it.
The once affordable and reliable USPS—and the 7.9 million jobs that depend on it—are at risk. This July, the USPS pushed through its sixth postage increase since August 2021. If we don’t stop these destructive rate hikes, it will be impossible to use the USPS!
It is time for Congress to put a stop to this!
Even though the PRC called the July postage increase “not prudent…and not in the best interests of all stakeholders” it claimed it had “no legal basis” to stop it. Congress needs to pass legislation that will allow the PRC to legally block unfair rate hikes and hold the USPS accountable for bad service and mismanagement.
The USPS SERVES US Act (H.R. 9839) will ensure the PRC has the mandate, tools, and authority necessary to do its job. The next time the USPS tries to pass an excessive rate increase or fails to meet its service obligations or improve productivity, the PRC can say No!
Tell Congress it is time to protect citizens, defend small businesses and make sure the USPS SERVES All of US!
