Associated Press Sports Editors recently launched a membership drive leading up to its 2025 convention in Minneapolis.
An Oct. 7 letter to sports journalists from APSE President Dan Spears urges sports editors from around Wisconsin to join the organization.
“While our organization is best known for our contest – which annually highlights the best sports journalism in the country – we also have a conference at which we provide in-person seminars and learning for our membership, as well as opportunities to meet other leaders in our industry outside of our computers, Zoom calls and cell phones,” Spears added.
“I know what you’re thinking: Well, that’s great for the big boys. And it is. Our organization includes the biggest newsrooms in the country, including the Star Tribune, Des Moines Register and Omaha World-Herald in the Midwest and Plains,” Spears added.
More than half of APSE’s membership comes from publications in smaller cities and regions, according to Spears, because it provides opportunities for sports journalists to receive mentorship from sports editors and reporters from around the US.
APSE members are encouraged to be judges in the organization’s annual contest, which offers the opportunity to read and critique the nation’s best sports writing.
“In short, our organization has been a stepping stone for journalists who want to climb in this industry. That includes me, a journalist who has gone from small-town sports copy editor and page designer to a leadership role I never would have imagined when I became a professional in 1995,” Spears wrote in the letter seeking members.
