Mertes joins WNA staff as newsletter editor, social media content manager

Chris Mertes, who has served the Sun Prairie area as a reporter and editor for 33 years formerly worked for The Star in Sun Prairie and currently as a freelance writer for the Middleton Times-Tribune, has joined the Wisconsin Newspaper Association as editor of the Weekly Briefing, the weekly Member Content and content manager for association’s Social Media pages.

“I am very excited that Chris has agreed to join the WNA team. I feel very fortunate to have a journalist of his caliber assuming the reins of the reporting on the happenings and issues impacting the association and the newspaper industry,” WNA Executive Director Beth Bennett said. “I encourage the members to reach out to Chris to share or request information that may be of interest or concern to the Wisconsin newspaper industry.”

Before joining WNA, Mertes worked as managing editor and a senior reporter for The Star, Sun Prairie’s newspaper. He received the 2024 James J. Reininger Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of Sun Prairie for his role at The Star and service to the community. He currently owns and operates 608 Beacon Enterprises LLC, which creates content for businesses and non-profit organizations, in Sun Prairie, and covers the Middleton Common Council for the Middleton Times-Tribune.
