September calls for sourdough! After all, it is National Sourdough Month! In today’s featured article, we’re serving up a few fan-favorite bakeries in Wisconsin that you need to visit. From the north-central to southern region of the state, there’s a bakery packed with warm, butter-melting, goodness. Read on and start your tasty trip throughout Wisconsin!
North-Central Wisconsin
Begin your bakery extravaganza in north-central Wisconsin! A hub of sensational sourdough is city of Stevens Point, home to two of the best bakeries in the region–Main Grain Bakery and Earth-Crust Bakery.
Main Grain Bakery & Eatery is rooted in sustainability, using organic, local ingredients. This bakery and eatery offers all the artisan bread you can dream of, plus more–sweets, treats, indulgent desserts, and the list goes on and on. The best part? It’s all made by hand.
Another Stevens Point sensation is Earth-Crust Bakery. This local bakery has been making mouth-watering magic since 1976. All the ingredients that are used to create these tasty treats are organic and locally sourced. And even cooler? Their products are all produced with the help of solar power!
Southern Wisconsin West Allis
Make your way to southern Wisconsin, where more of the best-of-the-best bakeries roll out the finest and freshest dough! Some of the most noteworthy can be found in the vibrant city of West Allis. Home to an array of unique cuisines, West Allis is a flavorful marvel you must experience.
Our first flavorful stop is Bread Pedalers, owned by biker-baker-sister-duo Sam & Skyler Schneider. If you didn’t know, biking is a BIG deal in West Allis, as it is home to the Tour of America’s Dairyland–the longest race series in the entire country, totaling 11 days. Besides their passion for biking, they’ve got quite a knack for baking. It all started with a bread club and transformed into baking for the entire community, spreading smiles one loaf at a time.
Next up, the West Allis staple, Grebe’s Bakery–an indulgent icon. Started in 1937, Grebe’s Bakery is not only going on 86 years of making baked goodness, but also 4 generations of business owners. And, believe it or not, it all started with butterhorns! Today, among their other notorious flavors, taste their variety of breads, coffee cakes, cookies, rolls & buns, and much more.
Even further south, follow the smell of fresh-baked treats to Racine, Wisconsin, home of the famous O&H Bakery. While they do have remarkable Scandinavian breads, they’re most known for their award-winning kringle–Wisconsin’s official state pastry. Shop for your favorite seasonal breads, while browsing the wide assortment of tasty kringle flavors, from everyday favorites to seasonal sensations. A little sweet-treat variety is ALWAYS a good idea!
Is your mouth watering yet? Plan your tasty trip across Wisconsin this September, in honor of National Sourdough Month! You just may find your new favorite bakery, whether you explore the north-central or southern region of the state. It’s all tasty! And, even better? It’s all made fresh and local in Wisconsin.
