Margaret Lown, affectionately known as Lonni, passed away from cancer at the age of 80 on May 26, 2024. She died peacefully in her home in Baraboo, surrounded by her loving children. She was born on June 19, 1943, to Robert and Janet Smith in Battle Creek, MI. After earning a degree in English Literature from Western Michigan University, she pursued a career in teaching and print journalism. A lifelong avid reader and writer, she discovered a love of photography as a newspaper reporter.
Lonni was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many with her vibrant spirit.
She is survived by her children: son, Erik Nidy and his partner, Jennifer Jarman, daughter, Ellen Nidy and her husband, Tim Capron; and her cherished grand- children: Owen Nidy and Oscar Capron; also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Bill Ross, their children: Ben, David, and Andy; and her niece, Shaw Geasland; and other relatives.
Lonni made significant contributions to her communities as the Assistant Editor of the Sauk-Prairie Star and later as Editor of the Wisconsin Dells Events. She was dedicated to reporting the truth and holding power accountable.
She had a love of storytelling, which was matched only by her passion for boats and the lighthouses of Lake Michigan. She and her husband, William Smith, who predeceased her, sailed regularly on Castle Rock Lake. But Lonni was happiest at home, which was a treasure trove of whimsy and antiques, reflecting her appreciation for all things charming and quirky.
Lonnie’s laughter was infectious, and she found joy in simple pleasures. She could often be found on her front porch, swinging in her chair hammock, perhaps watching a thunderstorm roll in or enjoying the dramas of the neighborhood birds. If she had to be indoors, she was likely creating elaborate and colorful designs in her nature-themed coloring books, or spoiling her beloved pup, Peaches.
Lonnie will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. A celebration of her life will be held later this year.
