Wisconsin Better Newspaper Contest deadline extended

The submission deadline for the Wisconsin Better Newspaper Contest has been extended until 10:59 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6.

Contestant managers are encouraged to review the contest Rules & Categories, Contestant Manager Guide, and answers to Frequently Asked Questions before submitting entries.

New categories this year include Audio Storytelling, Health Coverage (replaces Coronavirus Coverage) and Salesperson of the Year. The contest committee, which met last month, also vote to remove Overall Page Design in the Daily Division, Best Real Estate Ad and Best Grocery Ad, all of which had received a low number of entries for several years.

Logging in

You will first select “Contestant Manager” or “Authorized Entrant.” Most users will login in as a contestant manager. Choose your newspaper from the dropdown list (all newspapers are listed alphabetically by city name), enter your password and click “Login.”

Newspapers that entered the 2022 Better Newspaper Contest will use the same password as the newspaper used last year to log in. If you have forgotten the password used in 2022, click the “Forgot Password” link to reset your password. Newspapers that did not enter in 2022 will use the password bnc to log in for the first time for the 2023 contests.

After your first log-in, you will be prompted to enter a new password.

Contest information

Entrants are recognized across five contest divisions — two daily and three weekly. (Daily newspapers are defined by the WNA as publishing three of more times per week.) Newspapers are placed in divisions based on the number of copies of a single issue (print + e-edition) published nearest to the filing date of their 2022 Statement of Ownership published within the contest entry period.

The five newspapers that accumulate the most overall points from editorial and advertising awards will be named Best of Division. The top two newspapers across daily and weekly circulation divisions will be named Newspapers of the Year.

This year’s contest will be judged by members of the Kentucky Press Association. Awards will be presented during the 2024 WNA Convention on March 14-15 in Madison.
