Born to Samuel and Evelyn (Dobberstein) Shapiro on Aug. 7, 1941, in Madison, he graduated from Madison Central High School and the business school at UW-Madison. He married Wendy Adams in 1983. Shortly thereafter, he took over operation of the Belleville Recorder, which had been owned by Wendy’s parents. Through his efforts at the Recorder, as well as volunteer work with local organizations, Shapiro became a relentless booster for the village of Belleville.

In December 2008, the Recorder and the (New Glarus) Post Messenger merged to become the Post Messenger Recorder shortly after the newspapers were purchased by the Black Earth-based News Publishing Company, which is owned by Dan and Mark Witte.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
