As the members of the state Joint Finance Committee work on the 2023-25 state budget, they’ve been asked to consider a tax credit that will help small businesses advertise with local media outlets in Wisconsin.
This proposal — being championed by Rep. Todd Novak (R-Dodgeville) — would establish a 25% tax credit for small businesses that purchase advertising from Wisconsin-based newspapers, radio stations, television stations and online news organizations. The credit would be capped at $2,500 and would sunset after five years. (Download the proposal here.)
The advertising incentive creates a win-win scenario for small businesses that want to advertise and for local media outlets. Similar legislation was proposed last session and garnered bipartisan support.
The WNA is asking members to:
- Contact their state representatives and state senator to express support for the tax credit.
- Share this information with small business advertisers and encourage them to contact their legislators.
- Editorialize in support of the tax credit. (Copy is available for republication.)
